Investigation begins into the cause of a deadly plane crash near Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport on Thursday. KMUW’s Carla Eckels reports….

A Beechcraft King Air 200 struck the top of the FlightSafety International building. Four people have been confirmed dead. City of Wichita officials say three of the victims were from the Wichita area and one is from another country. Police spokesman Doug Nolte says the crash site is unsound.

"There are four deceased individuals persons that are in the building," he says. "We know that at this point that getting to the bodies is a challenge for rescuers."

Nolte says it’s even difficult getting into the building.

"The walls of the structure are unsafe so that’s what’s causing us problems," he says.

A structural engineer arrived at the scene Thursday to do a preliminary assessment of the facility and to provide guidance to emergency responders. Additional equipment is expected Friday to help remove portions of the building. The cause of the crash is still unknown.

Carla Eckels is Director of Organizational Culture at KMUW.
