A String Thing, Birthdays Of Monty Alexander And Joao Gilberto & More From The Silk Road

Monday, June 6

Global Village marks the birthday of Jamaican-born pianist Monty Alexander; continues with more music from June featured artists Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble – this time with music from Lebanese oud player Rabih Abou-Khalil, who composed for the Ensemble; and highlights music from the new studio release, Culcha Vulcha, from Snarky Puppy and new reggae albums from Natty Nation, and the Wailing Wailers (a reissue of the debut album from the original Wailers lineup of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer).

Tuesday, June 7

It’s a string thing this time in the Global Village, highlighting some world violin and cello artists and groups. Among the artists featured: June featured artist Yo-Yo Ma & the Silk Road Ensemble; neo-folk band, the Horse Flies; Las Hermanas Caronni, clarinet and cello playing twin sisters from Argentina; a new solo project from Carolina Chocolate Drops’ cellist Leyla McCalla; Cajun and roots fiddlers Michael Doucet & Tom Rigney from their new release together; the violin (and flute) driven charanga style from the band that pioneered the sound, Orquesta Aragon; and gypsy violinist Branko with accordionist and vocalist Faith from their latest project, Gypsy Lover.

Wednesday, June 8

Latin rock, soul, jazz and psychedelia this time in the Global Village, including music from the legendary Mongo Santamaria, West Coast Latin Jazz pioneer Cal Tjader, a rising star on the Cuban jazz scene – Harold Lopez-Nussa, the Rough Guide to Latin Psychedelia, and a song from War that was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Thursday, June 9

Global Village highlights artists from across the African continent – including Nigeria’s BLO (often credited as Africa’s first rock band), the Central African Republic’s Bibi Tanga & the Selenites (named for moon creatures in an H.G. Wells story), Uganda’s Geoffrey Oryema, the critically acclaimed Congelese band Staff Benda Bilili, Grammy winner and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Angelique Kidjo, and African-inspired music from guitarist Leni Stern and from the Liberators.

Friday, June 10

Global Village marks the birthday of bossa nova pioneer Joao Gilberto and highlights some new Brazilian releases: a live double-disc release from tropicalismo pioneers Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, the U.S. debut of Brazilian singer-songwriter Renato Braz, a Brazilian choro meets French chanson set from Ze Boiade, the contemporary sound of Sociedade Recreativa, and the new Rough Guide to Brazilian Jazz compilation.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
