Presidents’ Day, World Music Duos, Birthdays Of Buffy Sainte-Marie, Rhiannon Giddens & Corey Harris

Monday, February 19

Global Village celebrates Presidents’ Day with music from artists who ran for or won the office of president – including Dizzy Gillespie, Fela, Ruben Blades, and Michel Martelly – plus Les Ambassadeurs (because every president has some) and Brenda Fassie’s tribute to South African President, Nelson Mandela.

(Strange Currency and Night Train also celebrate President’s Day tonight.)

Tuesday, February 20

Global Village marks the birthday of singer, songwriter and indigenous activist Buffy Sainte-Marie, with music from one of her ‘60s albums up to her latest release, Medicine Songs, part of her remarkable and compelling comeback over the past decade. There are also more duos for the February feature, including Malagasy guitarist Dama & D’Gary, and cellist Redi Hasa with singer Maria Mazzotta – and there’s new music from Julio Pereira, 3MA, Robert Plant, and the Rough Guide to the Music of West Africa.

Wednesday, February 21

Global Village celebrates birthdays of critically acclaimed Americana and roots artist Rhiannon Giddens, and bluesman Corey Harris, who has incorporated reggae and African music into his work. Plus the latest from La Misa Negra, Boubacar Traore, and Ladama – and for the February duos feature, an exquisite duo project from Chinese erhu player Guo Gan and Ivory Coast balafon player Aly Keita.

Thursday, February 22

Some international reggae this time in the Global Village – with reggae-inspired sounds from Nigeria, Ghana, Poland, Russia, and other far flung places where Jamaican music has been an inspiration. Among the artists and bands featured are Russia’s Ersatz Musika, Germany’s Jahcoustix, U.K. singer Hollie Cook, U.S. based artists Rocky Dawuni and Rebel Tumbao, and even a reggae-flavored song from one of this year’s Rock Hall of Fame inductees, Nina Simone.

Friday, February 23

For the February feature, Global Village devotes this program to duos – twosomes from the same musical traditions, and also duos from different cultures who create an intriguing new blend of sounds. We’ll hear guitarists Ali Farka Toure and Ry Cooder, Talking Head David Byrne with Brazilian legend Caetano Veloso, kora player Ballake Sissoko with cellist Vincent Segal, cellist Matthieu Saglio with flamenco guitarist Jose ‘El Piru,’ singers June Tabor and Maddie Prior, the father and son duo of Toumani and Sidiki Diabate, and more.
