A Musical Life: William Henry Quincy

“I play bass in the roots-rock band North Platte. I’ve played bass nearly my whole life. I started in fourth grade in elementary school when they first introduced the option and just followed it all the way through school. I laid low for a few years after school but have been playing regularly for the last five or six years again.

There’s a couple of things that I think could have influenced my decision. My grandfather used to sing a song about a man that played the big bass viol to the kids in the family. My uncle has been a bass player since he was about 14 in a number of bands around town. And I’m guessing that those were probably influences.

The first music that I ever remember hearing was the Briefcase Full of Blues album and Magical Mystery Tour on my dad’s turntable, on big headphones that were larger than my head, that had a big coiled cord. I would just down, leaned up against the book shelves and listen to those things. So, I think, sonically, that music turned me on to it too.”
