More Latin Music, The French Antilles & Birthdays Of Fela, Rico Rodriguez, Peter Tosh & More

Monday, October 15

Global Village marks the birthday of Fela, one of the true giants of African music and the creator of Afrobeat, a style that wedded strong social commentary to equally powerful African music and American funk.  The program features classic sounds from Fela, and music from his sons Femi and Seun, Tony Allen who was the long-time collaborator and musical director for Fela’s band, the Red hot + Fela compilation, and American and European bands inspired by the Afrobeat sound.

Tuesday, October 16

A special show this time in the Global Village devoted to the music of the French Antilles. We’ll hear some early beguine, and the contemporary sounds of zouk, chouval bwa and more. Among the popular groups and artists featured are Kassav, Malavoi, Kali, Dede Saint-Prix, and Zouk Machine.

Wednesday, October 17

Global Village pays tribute to acclaimed Jamaican trombonist Rico Rodriguez, on what would have been his 84th birthday. We’ll hear him as a leader, working with Two Tone groups, the Specials and Selector - where he achieved his greatest acclaim, as a special guest with Joan Armatrading, John Martyn, and Toots & the Maytals, and as part of the Jazz Jamaica lineup.

Thursday, October 18

As we continue with Latin music throughout October in the Global Village, this time it’s Latin-plus, as a variety of Latin styles come together with soul, jazz, Indian, reggae, and other sounds. We’ll hear Latin soul jazz percussionist Poncho Sanchez, Senegalese rumba band Orchestra Baobab, Cuban a capella doo wop group Vocal Sampling, Latin jazz percussionist Ray Mantilla, Latin Indo Jazz pianist Mariah Parker, contemporary Afro-Colombian group Systema Solar, Latin ska from Ska Cubano, and some classic boogaloo from Joe Cuba and Mongo Santamaria.

Friday, October 19

Global Village pays tribute to Hamiet Bluiett and Jerry Gonzalez, two talented jazz artists who incorporated world influences into their work who passed away earlier this month. We also continue our centennial birthday feature for Bebo Valdes and Cachao. Plus there’s birthday salutes to reggae legend Peter Tosh, Brazilian bossa nova great Vinicius de Moraes, and clarinetist Eddie Daniels.
