More Caribbean Sounds + Birthdays Of Chick Corea, Jorge Santana & Papa Wemba

Monday, June 11

In conjunction with the June Caribbean American Heritage Month feature, Global Village visits some of the islands of the Caribbean whose music is not as well known. We’ll hear artists from Dominica, St. Vincent, Curacao, the Bahamas, Montserrat, St. Croix, the U.S. Virgin Island, St. Lucia and more. Among the artists featured are Exuma, Blinky & the Roadmasters, Stanley & the Ten Sleepless Knights, Arrow, and even a Caribbean flavored number from Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe.

Tuesday, June 12

Global Village celebrates Chick Corea’s birthday with music he did with Bela Fleck and from his classic My Spanish Heart album. We’ll also hear one of his compositions performed by Dominican pianist Michel Camilo and Spanish guitarist Tomatito. Plus new music from the NEA Heritage Fellow Rahim Alhaj, Cape Verdean singer Nancy Vieira, Malian artist (and former Ali Farka Toure bandmember) Samba Toure, the Kora Jazz Trio, and Finland’s Tunto.

Wednesday, June 13

It’s the birthday of guitarist and songwriter Jorge Santana (Carlos’ brother) and Global Village highlights music he did with Malo, the group he fronted, and as a special guest with the Fania All Stars. Plus more music for the June Caribbean American Heritage Month feature from Cuba’s Orquesta Akokan, and Haiti’s Boukman Eksperyans. We’re also featuring Tabou Combo, the acclaimed Haitian compas band that has made the U.S. home since the early ‘70s and this year is celebrating a 50th anniversary.

Thursday, June 14

Global Village remembers one of the great voices of African music, Papa Wemba, on his birthday. The show features music from Zaiko Langa Langa, a popular group he cofounded and where he first rose to stardom; his acclaimed Viva La Musica lineup; in appearances as a special guest with Manu Dibango and the Big Blue Ball project from RealWorld; and in covers of his songs from Africando and Juan Luis Guerra.

Friday, June 15

Global Village features some world jazz sounds this time – including the jazz-inspired styles of Afrobeat (from Italy’s Mamud Band), pioneering world chamber jazz ensemble Oregon, a Middle Eastern jazz project from guitar and oud player Amos Hoffman, and Flamenco Nuevo (from the Jazzpaña featuring Vince Mendoza, Steve Khan, the WDR Big Band and more).  And as Global Village continues the June Caribbean American Heritage Month feature there’s Haitian Mini Jazz (from the Mini All Stars), contemporary Cuban jazz from Roberto Fonseca, and the Jazz Jamaica lineup.
