According to a recent report from GradNation, the number of U.S. high school students graduating on time hit a record high with a rate of 82.3 percent for the Class of 2014.
Despite school funding problems, Kansas had a graduation rate of about 86 percent for 2014, based on recent data from the National Center for Education Statistics and the U.S. Department of Education. That makes it one of 29 states that exceeded or equaled the national average.
And while high on-time graduation rates are good news, there is still work to be done. In spite of significant increases for some groups, the nation continued to suffer from severe gaps in graduation rates affecting students of color--a fact that also rang true in Kansas.
For white students in Kansas, the graduation rate was 88.3 percent; for Latino students, 78.7 percent. Black students were even less likely to graduate on time: That number is 76.5 percent.
Additionally, the report found a more-than-17 percent difference in graduation rates between low-income and more affluent students in Kansas. That’s a problem because, according to the report, half of Kansas students qualify as low income.
