July’s Nordic Feature, Cape Verde Independence & New Month/New Music

Monday, July 2

Global Village kicks off the July ‘Cool Nordic Music’ feature with the varied sounds of Nordic Jazz – including the pioneering work of Jan Garbarek, emerging bands like the Sun Trio, the distinctive sax and goat horn folk-jazz of Karl Seglem, Nordic groups that incorporate Brazilian influences such as Nordic Choro and Jukka Eskola’s Orquesta Bossa, and Eurojazz players Terje Rypdal, E.S.T. and Arild Anderson.

Tuesday, July 3

It takes two…or three or four to tango – and Global Village has that many and more lined up to showcase the richness of tango music. We’ll hear classic sounds from ‘The Black Pearl of Tango,’ Lagrima Rios, and a favorite from early tango star Carlos Gardel performed by Berta Rojas on her Latin-Grammy nominated album, History of Tango. There’s ‘new tango’ music from Pablo Ziegler in a piece called “Mahavishnu Tango” that he wrote with jazz guitar legend John McLaughlin, and tango-reimagined by Germany’s Quadro Nuevo.

Wednesday, July 4

Global Village celebrates birthdays of Bill Withers and Fred Wesley with music from both, including one of many tracks Wesley did as part of the JB Horns with James Brown, along with music both did under their own names. Plus new music from Seun Kuti (Afrobeat legend Fela’s son), Mexico’s Sonido Gallo Negro, and The Turbans – and as we continue our July Nordic feature, one of the pioneering neo-folk groups from Finland, Varttina.

Thursday, July 5

Global Village celebrates another Independence Day – this time of Cape Verde – with music from the island nation’s legendary Cesaria Evora, Evora’s musical director Bau, songwriter Teofile Chantre and protégé Fantcha, rising star Elida Almeida, Bana - the ‘King of Mourna,’ and the Space Echo compilation that captured the developing modern sounds of ‘70s and ‘80s Cape Verde.

Friday, July 6

It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of recently released and forthcoming world music albums.  Among the highlights this time:

Angelique Kidjo’s reinterpretation of the Talking Heads’ album Remain in Light

Buena Vista guitarist Eliades Ochoa with  Alejando Almenares in  a set of traditional Cuban instrumentals

Live recordings from Two-Tone punk-ska bands the Selecter and the Beat

Italian reggae band Mellow Mood

North Carolina based Senegalese artist Diali Cissokho with his band Kaira Ba

Finnish female new-folk band Enkel, to help kick off the July ‘Cool Nordic Sounds’ feature

And groundbreaking ‘50s recordings from Central and East Africa on a new compilation, Listen All Around.
