GOP State Representative Who Was Asked To Drop Out Of Race Wins Re-Election

A Republican Kansas House member accused of child abuse has won his bid for re-election.

Incumbent 85th District Rep. Michael Capps beat Democrat newcomer Monica Marks in a tight race Tuesday.

Capps was asked to withdraw from the House race by the Kansas Republican Party after accusations of child abuse surfaced in August. The Kansas Department for Children and Families found Capps guilty of child abuse, but the state overturned the decision for technical reasons.

Capps called the accusations of child abuse “categorically false and untrue.”

Capps has represented the House 85th District since July, appointed after Republican Chuck Weber’s resignation. He won his race against Marks 54 to 46 percent.
