Night Train begins a week-long tribute to influential jazz bongo player Jack Costanzo, who passed away last week, and throughout the week, the show also features a series of new albums featuring the organ, including tonight from Ben Paterson. Plus more for the August Four Centennials feature, this time from Ike Quebec; birthday salutes to Kansas City’s Danny Embry, guitarist Rez Abbasi, tenor great Lester Young, and also organ and harp player Alice Coltrane (including a special exploring her musical career in hour two of the show).

And we’ll mark birthdays of organist Larry Goldings, guitarist Nate Najar, flugelhorn player Mike Metheny (we’ll hear him with brother Pat), and singer Cecile McLorin Salvant (including a concert special featuring her at the Savannah Music Festival in hour two of the show).

Night Train celebrates birthdays of German pianist and composer Florian Hoefner, singer Dinah Washington (with music from a tribute album Aretha Franklin did), and jazz legend Charlie Parker (including Bird compositions performed by August featured artist Eddie Jefferson, guitarist Grant Green and pianist Hank Jones, and a special about Parker in hour two of the show). Plus more new jazz organ albums and the tribute this week to percussionist Jack Costanzo continues with music he did with the Lighthouse All-Stars.

Night Train wraps up the August feature celebrating centennial birthdays of Eddie Jefferson, Arnett Cobb, Ike Quebec and Jimmy Rowles – and its week-long tribute to percussionist Jack Costanzo, who passed away last week. Plus birthday salutes to singer Jewel Brown (who worked with Arnett Cobb) and trumpeter Kenny Dorham (including a special in hour two devoted to Dorham and some other hard bop trumpet masters) – and new music from organist Jared Gold, singer Allan Harris, and bassist Buster Williams.
