Farewell India, Hello Silk Road & New Month/New Music Time

Monday, May 30

Global Village remembers legendary Latin percussionist Armando Peraza on his birthday with music he did under his own name, with Santana, and with blues legend John Lee Hooker. Plus new music from Snarky Puppy, the Fela & Koola Lobitos compilation, and Buena Vista Social Club guitarist Eliades Ochoa – and more Music of India for the May feature from contemporary bhangra artist Taz and from world fusion composer James Asher.

Tuesday, May 31

Global Village wraps up the May Music of India feature with some Indian fusion – artists from India and from around the world who combine Indian music with rock, jazz and other styles of music. Among the artists featured are Bollywood legend R.D. Burman, the Kronos Quartet from their album of Burman music, electric Carnatic guitarist Prasanna, Indi-pop pioneer Sheila Chandra with Monsoon, Anoushka Shankar with Karsh Kale, and Canadian artists Sultans of String and Kiran Ahluwahlia.

Wednesday, June 1

Global Village kicks off the June feature of music from Yo-Yo & the Silk Road Ensemble with music from the group’s impressive new album, Sing Me Home. Plus new music from Ghana – a reissue of Ghanian star Ebo Taylor’s My Love and Music, and a new project from former Osibisa member Nii Okia Tagoe - and the latest from Italy’s Stefano Saletti & Banda Ikona.

Thursday, June 2

Global Village highlights African, Afro-Cuban and Afro-Peruvian sounds this time – including Guinean ‘cool groove’ saxophonist Mamadou Barry; Cuban doo-wop group Los Zafiros (with guitarist and musical director Manuel Galban, who several decades later joined the Buena Vista Social Club); the Afrocubism album (which a decade after the first recording finally realized the initial plan of the Buena Vista Social Club to bring together African and Cuban musicians); Afro-Peruvian champion Susana Baca; and Malian singer-songwriter Rokia Traore.

Friday, June 3

It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of new world music releases.  Among the highlights this time:

The first reissue of the Wailers’ first album with the original cover art and track listing

The new self-titled release from Ziggy Marley

Some top neo-folk bands on the scene today: the Welsh duo 9Bach, Scottish band Breabach, & Irish supergroup, the Gloaming

African guitar legend Djelimady Tounkara

Latin world and rock from the reunited Woodstock era Santana band, and New York based Afro-Colombian group, Mezcla

And crosscultural meetings of Amjad Ali Khan with Rahim Alhaj, and Ravichandra Kulur with Jean-Luc Thomas.
