Birthdays Of Fats Waller, Sun Ra, Artie Shaw, Dylan & More

Monday 5.21.18

Night Train marks the birthday of Fats Waller with some music from the great stride pianist and singer in hour one, and a special about his life and music in hour two. We’ll also mark birthdays of guitarist Marc Ribot, bassist Joe Byrd, bandleader and arranger Bill Holman, and drummer Larance Marable. And as we continue our Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month feature, a surprising Latin jazz album from Japanese pianist Makoto Ozone and the No Name Horses big band.

Tuesday 5.22.18

Night Train joins in with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate the birthday of bandleader, pianist, composer and provocateur, Sun Ra, including music from several of his albums in hour one and a Jazz Profiles special about his life and music in hour two of the show. It’s also the birthday of trombonist Nick Finzer and Night Train will highlight music from his new album, No Arrival.  We’ll also dip into Yusef Lateef’s pioneering Eastern Sounds album for the May Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month feature.

Wednesday 5.23.18

Music from Ken Peplowski (from a new big band album), Richie Beirach, Randy Sandke, and Artie Shaw for their birthdays – including an Artie Shaw special with biographer Tom Nolan in hour two of the show.  Also some new ‘vintage’ sounds from the Glenn Crytzer Orchestra, and as we continue the May Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month feature, selections from Akira Tana and the Anthony Brown Asian American Orchestra.

Thursday 5.24.18

Night Train joins in with Global Village and Strange Currency tonight to celebrate the birthday of Bob Dylan with jazz covers of his songs from Madeleine Peyroux, Ben Sidran, Bobby McFerrin, and Kurt Elling. Plus birthday salutes to soul jazz organist Charles Earland and saxophonist Archie Shepp.
