Best Of 2018, National Science Fiction Day & Jazz Birthdays

Monday 12.31.19

Night Train steps aside for two New Year’s Eve specials to help ring in the new year. In hour one, it’s “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve” and then in hour two, a New Year’s Eve Jam, featuring classic and contemporary jazz sounds for the holiday.

Tuesday 1.1.19

Night Train kicks off the new year and a new month’s feature – the Best of 2018 – with some show favorites (including Ben Allison, Tim Warfield, Jim Snidero & Jeremy Pelt, Grant Green) and Grammy nominees (the Count Basie Orchestra, Elio Villafranca). Plus it’s also the birthday of standards singer Susannah McCorkle and of vibes legend and Modern Jazz Quartet member Milt Jackson.

Wednesday 1.2.19

Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate National Science Fiction Day. We’ll hear sci-fi themed sounds from Sun Ra, Herbie Hancock, Fred Hersch, Lorraine Feather, Christian McBride, Christian Sands and more in hour one, and a Jazz from Outer Space special in hour two of the show.

Thursday 1.3.19

Night Train marks the birthday of versatile horn man James Carter with music he did as a leader and also as a guest with violinist Regina Carter (his cousin), pianist Cyrus Chestnut and singer Karrin Allyson. Plus more for the January Best of 2018 feature – this time from Kurt Elling, Kevin Connor & Swing 3PO, Bill Anschell, and Ben Paterson; and new music from Kansas City’s OJT, pianist Kenny Werner and trumpeter Thomas Marriott.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
