Monday 1.7.19

Night Train highlights some jazz piano trios tonight. We’ll hear some classic lineups, including those led by Oscar Peterson, Red Garland, and Nat Cole, and some of the piano trio releases on our Best of 2018 list, including Aaron Goldberg, David Hazeltine and Alfredo Rodriguez. And as we continue our January Best of ’18 feature, there’s also music from the Grammy-nominated album from Cecile McLorin Salvant, a tribute to Hamiet Bluiett who passed away last year and some music from 2018 NEA Jazz Master Pat Metheny.

Tuesday 1.8.19

Some ‘good vibes’ tonight on the Night Train with some of the masters and contemporary stars of the jazz vibraphone. Among the artist featured: Milt Jackson (with Hubert Laws), Bobby Hutcherson (on an early classic from Joe Henderson), Gary Burton (with Chick Corea), Steve Nelson (from an album in tribute to Mulgrew Miller, and Dave Samuels (with his Caribbean Jazz Project). Plus selections from KC singer Deborah Brown, guitarists Ralph Towner and Steve Khan and jazz bass great Ron Carter.

Wednesay 1.9.19

Night Train marks birthdays of guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli (including a special featuring his performance at the Savannah Music Festival in hour two of the show) and singer Betty Roche. Plus more in the January Best of 2018 feature, including music from previously unreleased concert performance from pianist Erroll Garner; and new music from Van Morrison, Harold Mabern and Houston Person with Ron Carter.

Thursday 1.10.19

Night Train marks birthdays of Max Roach (including a Jazz Profiles special about the legendary jazz drummer in hour two of the show), guitarist Mike Stern, and bandleader Buddy Johnson. We continue our look back at the best of 2018 with music from the “Standards Trio” of Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, and a tribute to saxophonist Sonny Fortune, who passed away in 2018. New music tonight includes the latest from the Brad Goode Quintet and John Scofield.
