Several generations of soukous are featured this time in the Global Village – from the ‘father of Congolese music’, Le Grand Kalle, to one of the giants of the style, Tabu Ley Rochereau, along with one of the later stars, Sam Mangwana, and a new group reviving the classic sound, Black Bazar. Plus Bill Frisell, Willie Bobo, Steely Dan, and some rockin’ twist music from ‘60s Spain.

Thursday, April 7

More from April featured aritists Fanfare Ciocarlia, birthday salutes to influential Nigerian drummer Olatunji, Latin jazz and soul percussionist Mongo Santamaria, and sitar legend Ravi Shankar, and a little something to celebrate National Beer Day.

Highlights include music from the Soul Brothers, Mahlathini & the Mahotella Queens, the African Jazz Pioneers, Ladysmith Black Mambazo – and new releases from Max-Hobo, Afrika Mamas, and the Rough Guide to South African Jazz.
