Night Train celebrates the 4th of July with two special live performances from the Airmen of Note, the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force. In hour one of the show, the Airmen are joined by one of the top vibes players in jazz today – Stefon Harris. Then in hour two, they greet two special guests – trumpeter Marvin Stamm (whose credits include working with everyone from Stan Kenton and Paul Desmond to Donald Fagen and Deodato) and West Coast pianist and popular session player Bill Mays.

Night Train kicks off the July feature celebrating the centennial birthday of electric guitar pioneer Charlie Christian and the electric guitar in jazz with Christian’s classic “Solo Flight” and music from guitarists Wes Montgomery, Will Bernard, and Ronald Muldrow – along with a special in hour two chronicling “100 Years of Jazz Guitar.” Plus new music from Bill Laurance of Snarky Puppy, organist Bill Charette, and Frank Catalano with Jimmy Chamberlain.

Throughout July, Night Train highlights the electric guitar in jazz, in honor of the centennial birthday of jazz electric guitar pioneer Charlie Christian. Featured tonight are new albums from contemporary players Pat Metheny and Hristo Vitchev, and classic tracks from guitar legends Herb Ellis (from his album Thank You Charlie Christian) and Jim Hall. Plus Art Farmer and Chico O’Farrill’s classic Aztec Suite and Rene Marie’s new album and first all-originals project, Sound of Red.

Plus birthday salutes to four-string electric guitar master Tiny Grimes, hard box tenor man Hank Mobley, and keyboardist and composer Joe Zawinul (in music he did with Cannonball Adderley, Weather Report and Miles Davis). And there’s new music from the New York Jazz Orchestra with salute to Herbie Hancock, singers Kevin Mahogany and Champian Fulton, and Brazilian pianist Antonio Adolfo.
