Since 1975, WRRS, KMUW’s sub-carrier for the print-handicapped, has provided free, closed-circuit radio broadcast readings of local and national newspapers, magazines and novels to listeners in South Central Kansas. WRRS listeners are area citizens who suffer from vision, physical or cognitive handicaps that limit their ability to read the printed word. As our population ages, new listeners are in need of this important service. Your support will help us provide this vital connection for many in our area communities.

Mission Statement…

WRRS provides the print handicapped of South Central Kansas with daily readings of newspapers and current periodicals, while enhancing and extending the services of KMUW and WSU.

About…

WRRS provides local and national programming twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Over 150 volunteers read The Wichita Eagle and other national newspapers, magazines and novels. Programming is obtained from Audio Reader during overnight hours. In addition, poetry readings, short stories and other creative presentations are provided by local volunteers.

WRRS is available to any person who due to a physical, vision or cognitive handicap is no longer able to read 14-point type with ease. Area residents may apply for a receiver which is preset to the special subcarrier signal. Upon receipt of a completed application, WRRS will loan this receiver free of charge. We invite you to help us “Spread the Word” about WRRS.

For more than 30 years community volunteers have provided the “voice” of the Wichita Radio Reading Service (WRRS). Many of those dedicated readers are featured in the bios listed here. There are many, many, more with stories to be told.

They cut across every line of the community and their experience among their peers ranges from fledgling first-year substitute to 25-year veteran. What draws them to read for the print handicapped is as diverse as they are. Some have blind friends or relatives, others simply like to read aloud, or it fulfills a need to be of service.

Their methods vary as well. Many read live, usually in one-hour blocs at the WRRS studio. Many others are recorded and played back later. A few are pre-recorded for special playback times.
Financial contributions are necessary to maintain this valuable community service. Click on the link to “Support WRRS.”

If you are interested in volunteering at the service, making a financial contribution, or know someone who would definitely benefit from the use of the Wichita Radio Reading Service, please call 978-6600. WRRS is a vital community service which needs your commitment of time and talent.
