Global Village

Weeknights at 9pm
HD2: Monday - Thursday: Midnight, 9am, 2pm 7pm; Friday: 5pm

Join us weeknights at 9 p.m. and several times a day on KMUW-HD2 for a musical adventure with Global Village. From classic recordings to the latest new releases, from right around the corner to halfway around the world, host Chris Heim presents a wide range of world music, along with jazz, rock, folk and other styles, artists and songs with world and roots influences. Each month, we also focus on a particular artist, style or theme (see below), going deeper into the music and offering some rare and seldom heard selections. And the first Friday of every month, hear the best new releases with the Global Village Top 30 show, which also airs Fridays on KMUW-HD2. Each night is a different musical journey, with music that is unusual and intriguing, yet still seems very close to home.

KMUW 89.1 Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with the Chieftains/Ry Cooder’s “San Patricio”

Truth sometimes is stranger than fiction, and no more so than in the story of the San Patricios, Irish-born soldiers who deserted from the U.S. to fight on the side of Mexico during the Mexican-American War of 1846-48, with tragic results.

Paddy Maloney of the acclaimed Irish traditional band, the Chieftains, world and roots music star Ry Cooder, and historian Peter Stevens join forces to tell the tale, reveal more links between Irish and Mexican culture and share music from the new Chieftains/Cooder CD, San Patricio.

March 2010: Women in World Music: A Celebration for Women’s History Month

In honor of Women’s History Month, Global Village will focus on women in world music. While women are still only slowly making their way into musical careers in many parts of the world, they have become important ambassadors for their homes and musical cultures in others. Miriam Makeba was a pioneer and one of South Africa’s most revered artists. Cesaria Evora almost single-handedly brought the sounds of Cape Verde to audiences around the world. Oumou Sangare is widely recognized not only as one of Mali’s most important artists, but an key voice for the concerns of women in her country and around the world. Gal Costa and Maria Bethania were important figures in Brazilian tropicalia, while artists like Marisa Monte and Bebel Gilberto head up a new generation of singers from that country. And the fame of Portuguese fado has spread around the world thanks largely to electrifying performers like Mariza. Global Village highlights both the great and the emerging female artists in world music throughout the entire month of March.

April 2010: Jazz Appreciation Month

Jazz Meets World In honor of Jazz Appreciation Month, Global Village will focus throughout April on the exciting borders where jazz meets world music. Jazz has always been a very rich and absorptive genre, open to a wide variety of influences and styles. In recent years, one of the most exciting and engaging developments in jazz has come from the exploration of influences, rhythms and styles from around the world. Latin jazz too has seen a remarkable resurgence, with a number of artists pushing the boundaries beyond earlier Afro-Cuban and Brazilian blends. Throughout April, we’ll highlight everything from early world/jazz experiments to some of today’s most exciting and innovative new players and projects.

May 2010: In Celebration of Asian Heritage Month

Music of Vietnamese Guitarist Nguyen Le This month Global Village features music of guitarist, composer, arranger and band leader Nguyen Le. Born in Paris to Vietnamese parents, this former philosophy student turned self-taught musician made his first mark on the music scene with the world music-inspired group Ultramarine. He released his first album as a leader in 1990 and has followed with a series of provocative and inventive recordings -  several done in collaboration with Paris-based Vietnamese singer Huong Thanh - that combine jazz, Vietnamese, Latin, African and Indian music.  In addition, Le has worked with an impressive list of artists that includes Vince Mendoza, Art Lande, Ornette Coleman, Paul McCandless, Uri Caine and many others. Throughout the month, Global Village will highlight music of Nguyen Le, from collaborations to his work as a leader and from his early days in Ultramarine to his newest CD Saiyuki, just released in the United States.
