July 2009: Madagascar

This month Global Village features music of Madagascar. Like the remarkable flora and fauna of this island nation, the music of Madagascar is rich, florid and unlike anything else in the world. But until the 1990s, when Globestyle released its Madagasikara series and David Lindley and Henry Kaiser produced A World out of Time, virtually none of this music was available here. Since then a number of talented groups and artists have recorded and toured internationally, including Tarika, Jaojoby, Rajery , D’Gary (who most recently was part of Bela Fleck’s African Project tour and CD) and more.Throughout the month, Global Village highlights music from Madagascar, from traditional sounds to some of the latest contemporary bands and artists.
