Howlin’ Wolf Resources

Books:

Many blues resource books have sections about Howlin’ Wolf. Surprisingly, there is only one full biography at present, the 2005 release, Moanin’ at Midnight: The Life and Times of Howlin’ Wolf by James Segrest and Mark Hoffman. On the one hand, the writing leaves much to be desired and the authors seem to want to throw in every quote they got from everyone regardless of whether it fits or whether the point has already been made (often in nearly identical terms). On the other, they did seem to talk to or track down interviews with nearly everyone who knew or worked with Wolf and offer a detailed story of his life and more complex view of his personality.

The authors’ website also features a biography, audio, video and (one of the best parts) an extensive list of related links.

The city of West Point, where Wolf was born, is home to the Howlin’ Wolf Blues Society, which promotes a number of programs, including an annual blues festival. This year’s event takes place on September 3rd. Howlin’ Wolf Blues Society
