Growing Up In Wichita In The Fifties

When I grew up in Wichita, I had no idea that other kids didn’t go to summer school. As a 10-year-old my mother gave me .50 cents and sent me on the bus to East High School from the West side (18th and Woodrow) to learn to play the trumpet. That .50 cents was enough to get to school and back everyday, plus buy ice cream at Armstrong’s, then find something to buy in Kress’ basement. Oh, those fabulous fifties.
