Changes Over The Years
By Fran Belden
I came to Wichita in 1968 with my husband and two very small children. A “typical” 50’s housewife who was a good mother, but wanted more. My third child was born in 1970 and I tried to immense myself in my children because I didn’t do a very good job of being a proper wife. In 78’ I enrolled at WSU Graduate School—AH, it was wonderful!
Following my MEd I began working at the Women’s Crisis Center and learned much. Soon after my husband and I divorced. I went on to work as a Counselor/Educator at Planned Parenthood of Kansas, and after several years there went to Dr. Tiller’s clinic as a counselor. Over these years I changed a lot from the young woman who arrived in Wichita in 68’.
Far more aware, liberal, unwilling to point fingers except at people who tried to run other folk’s lives. Today, exactly two months since the murder of Dr. Tiller, my last boss (I retired in 2001), I know deep in my bones my jobs were RIGHT. I don’t know much more except that I hurt.
