WSU Federal Writers’ Project Series
Mon, May 11, 2009
The current economic problems have brought a renewed interest in the Great Depression, FDR and the New Deal. Now a new series here in Wichita will focus on one of the more fascinating aspects of the New Deal, the Federal Writers' Project.KMUW's Chris Heim filed this report about a new National Endowment for the Humanities program, Soul of a People, and a series on the Federal Writers' Project it helped fund at the Wichita State University Libraries, which house the largest collection of materials compiled by WPA researchers in Kansas. The Libraries will host five programs covering the cultural legacy of the Depression, the Kansas Writers' Project, oral histories, famous Project author John Cheever, and life in 1930s Wichita.
The first event in the Soul of a People series takes place May 12th in the Ablah Library on the WSU campus. Additional events at WSU, the Rockwell Branch of the Wichita Public Library and the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum continue through June.
