Transracial Adoptees Face Difficulties
Tue, January 10, 2012
A recent survey by the US Department of Health and Human Services shows that 40 percent of all adoptions in the United States involve parents of one racial group adopting a child of a different race. Of these transracial adoptions, the most historically controversial have involved white parents adopting black children.
Dr. Darron Smith is an assistant professor and researcher at Wichita State University—he’s coauthored a book called White Parents, Black Children: Experiencing Transracial Adoption, in which he studies the unique difficulties facing transracial adoptees in dealing with racial discrimination. KMUW’s Fletcher Powell sat down with Smith and asked him about these challenges and his advice for adoptive parents.
