Free income tax preparation and e-filing will be available beginning Jan. 23 to low and moderate income Kansans.

The service will be available at sites across the state including many in the Wichita area.

Jeannine Koranda is a public information office for the Kansas Department of Revenue, she says the assistance sites are a partnership between the Kansas Department of Revenue and the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, or VITA.

“Community IRS trained certified volunteers will be on site and they will help people electronically file their Federal and state individual income tax returns,” says Koranda, “they will also help with limited Kansas homestead claims and property tax relief claims. The program is targeted to help low and moderate income people, generally it is those earning $49,000 or less who cannot prepare their own taxes.”

Most sites are open through the April 17th tax deadline.

Area VITA site information is only available by phone, at 1-800-906-9887.
