Annual celebrations top this week’s roundup of live music, with the 14th annual Blues Ball here in Wichita, a 30th anniversary tour by Jason and the Scorchers, and a 19th anniversary celebration for Oklahoma City folk mecca, the Blue Door.  Plus lots of S’s including Split Lip, Scheherazade, Shaver, Sweat, and Shelby and to top things off, a couple of jazz dates.

Anniversary Songs

In a nice confluence of numbers, the 14th annual Wichita Blues Society Blues Ball takes place on the 14th at the Cotillion. Headlining is up-and-coming sibling ensemble, Trampled Under Foot. The International Blues Competition and Blues Blast winners were just nominated for three Blues Music Awards (band, DVD and bass) and came out with their fourth release, Wrong Side of the Blues, last year. Also appearing are Wichita Blues Competition winners, Craig Steward and the Rachelle Coba Band.

Trampled Under Foot with “Love My Baby”

Wednesday sees Jason and the Scorchers at Knuckleheads Saloon in Kansas City. The date is part of a 30th anniversary tour for the pioneering alt-country band.

Thursday OKC folk mecca, the Blue Door, celebrates its 19th Anniversary with a lineup that includes Jon Dee Graham, John Fullbright, Michael Fracasso, Patrice Pike, Shannon McNally, Susan Herndon, and Terry Buffalo Ware and the Shambles.

THE LETTER S

...for Shaver, Shelby, Scheherazade (and Symphony), Scott and Sweat .

Texas outlaw-country singer and songwriter Billy Joe Shaver has several shows this week - Thursday at Grady’s 66 Pub in Oklahoma City, Friday at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa and Sunday at Knuckleheads Saloon in Kansas City.

Friday smart Americana artist Shelby Lynne is at the Folly Theater in Kansas City and Split Lip Rayfield plays the Cotillion.

On Saturday, the Wichita Symphony Orchestra performs Rimsky Korsakov’s Scheherazade, and Grammy-nominated pianist Terrence Wilson is featured in Gershwin’s jazz-inspired Piano Concerto. Another performance is also offered Sunday, both at Century II.
Also Saturday Americana singer-songwriter Darrell Scott (whose songs have been performed by Keb’ Mo’, the Dixie Chicks, Guy Clark, Sam Bush and Johnny Cash, to name a few) will be at the All Soul Acoustic Coffeehouse in Tulsa; and ‘90s new jack swing/soul star Keith Sweat appears at Riverwind Casino in Norman.

JAZZ

Since she first appeared on the scene in the ‘90s, Nnenna Freelon was immediately recognized as one of the more talented female vocalists on the jazz scene, in something of a Sarah Vaughan mold, with five Grammy nominations to prove it. She’s at the Folly Theater in Kansas City Saturday.

Sunday the current season at the Topeka Jazz Workshop (Downtown Ramada, Topeka) continues with   Interstring featuring bassist Bob Bowman, drummer Todd Strait and guitarists Danny Embrey and Rod Fleeman. More on the TJW season at: topekajazz.com
