A slow start to the year for live music, but there are several blues dates around the region and a major jazz show here in Wichita.

Blues

About the only thing shaking this week around the region for live music is the blues.

Kansas City blueswoman Samantha Fish had a breakout 2011 - touring with the Blues Caravan (and appearing on the related Girls with Guitars album and then releasing a solid debut album, Runaway.  She has a couple of home dates this week, Wednesday at Knuckleheads Saloon and Thursday at BBs Lawnside BBQ, a couple of her regular haunts.

In Topeka, Uncle Bo’s begins the year with another KC blues woman (and BBs regular), Mary Bridgett Davies, on Friday. The next night, it’s Hadden Sayers , the guitarist in Ruthie Foster’s band who also released his own solo album, Hard Dollar, last year.

Jazz

The big news this week is the Wichita date for the Bad Plus. Since forming a decade ago, this acoustic trio has become one of the premier jazz rock bands around, known for their adventurous fusion of jazz, rock and other elements and ability to generate a whirlwind of sound. Though they partly made a name for themselves with their unique rock covers, the group’s most recent release, the 2010 album Never Stop, was the first to feature all original material. They appear Sunday at Abode Venue.

The Bad Plus live with “And Here We Test Our Powers of Observation”:

One other jazz note - KC bluesy jazz organist Everette Devan will be appearing Friday in the Blue Room in Kansas City.
