Saturday

One of today’s finest Latin jazz percussionists and band leaders,  Poncho Sanchez, brings his Latin Jazz Band to the Carlsen Center in Overland Park. His latest release, Chano Y Dizzy, is a salute to the pioneering Latin jazz of Chano Pozo and Dizzy Gillespie that featured Terence Blanchard in the trumpet role.Sanchez and Blanchard are also the headliners at this year’s Wichita Jazz Festival in April, which boasts a spectacular Latin jazz lineup that also includes “genius grant” recipient Miguel Zenon and Afro-Peruvian jazz pioneer Gabriel Alegria.

Sunday

Ladysmith Black Mambazo is one of the best known South African ensembles in the world. After their breakthrough work on Paul Simon’s Graceland album, they emerged as a popular international act, acclaimed for their remarkable harmonies and joyous sound. The group was nominated for a Grammy for last year’s Songs from a Zulu Farm and have just released a two-disc compilation that brings together collaborations with a wide range of artists that the group has done over its 45-year history. Ladysmith uses the occasion to kick off a three-month U.S. tour that brings them to the Tulsa Performing Arts Center Sunday and then the Kauffman Center in Kansas City on the 24th.
