It's been four and a half decades since Anne Tyler, then aged 22, released her first novel, If Morning Ever Comes. Since then she received the Pulitzer Prize for Breathing Lessons, a National Book Critics Circle Award for The Accidental Tourist and saw Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant a finalist for both the Pulitzer and the PEN/Faulkner Award. Tyler has also garnered a host of critical accolades, no small feat for a writer who has seen popular success, praised particularly for her finely crafted writing and focus on the hopes, dreams and struggles of ordinary people. Here is KMUW book critic Sarah Bagby's look at Tyler's newest novel.

You can hear Sarah Bagby's book reviews the second and fourth Mondays of every month on Morning Edition or listen online, anytime, and find additional information about the books and authors reviewed here.
