Book Review:
Homer and Langley by E.L. Doctorow
Historical fiction is often a painful and awkward fusion of prose and past events. But in the hands of E.L. Doctorow, it has become a different and completely remarkable blend of another sort - fiction of the highest order that is also commercially successful. From his 1960 debut novel, Welcome to Hard Times, through such well-received works as The Book of Daniel, Billy Bathgate, World's Fair - and, above all, Ragtime - Doctorow found inspiration from the past, particularly 20th Century New York. It was there that he turned once again for the source material of his latest novel, due out September 1st.You can hear Sarah Bagby's book reviews the second and fourth Mondays of every month on Morning Edition, and find more information about books and authors reviewed here.
