Kansas Unemployment Rate Holds Steady, Though State Gained 15,400 Jobs in February

The jobless rate in Kansas isn't falling, but it didn't get worse in February.

The (not seasonally adjusted) unemployment rate declined from 6.2 to 5.8 percent, while the smooth seasonally adjusted number remained steady at 5.5 percent for the fourth month. In February 2012, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.9 percent.

Senior Services To Hold 31st Annual Job Fair

Investment losses in recent years and higher prescription drug prices are forcing many seniors to continue employment or return to work. That’s according to Laurel Alkire, the executive director for Senior Services of Wichita.

“We saw last year about 800 applicants come through looking for work," she says.

"I believe we placed about 560 of those, so our placement rate is pretty high."

The 31st annual Senior Employment Job Fair for workers 55 and older will be on March 19. The application deadline to attend is March 15.

Kansas Jobless Rate Unchanged at 5.4 Percent

A new report says the Kansas unemployment rate held steady at 5.4 percent in December while the state recorded modest job growth over the previous year.

The report from the state Labor Department also says last month's jobless figure was down one full point from December 2011.

Koch Industries To Expand Wichita Campus, Create More Jobs

Wichita based Koch industries Thursday announced plans to expand its northeast campus on 37th Street between Hillside and Oliver.

The new 210,000-square-foot building will be three stories, include a large cafe and have space for 745 employees. Koch spokesperson Melissa Cohlmia says currently Koch Industries in Wichita employs 2,800 people.

"That number, we know, will be significantly increasing," says Cohlmia.

Opponents of immigration policies favored by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach are calling for his resignation.

A group called the DREAM Act Coalition expects up to 75 people from around the country to join with others at an anti-Kobach rally Tuesday at a Topeka state office building.
