Live & Learn – February 2006

An old Spanish proverb says "When the head aches, all the body is out of tune."  An Italian proverb declares that "A happy heart is better than a full purse."  Both the head and the heart will be the subjects for the next Live & Learn Lecture, 11:30 a.m. February 14.  Wichita Public Radio, the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita and the Medical Society of Sedgwick County continue the lecture series by presenting Dr. Salman Ashfaq, speaking on the topic "Of the Heart and Head: How the Health of One Affects the Other" in a public lecture at the KU School of Medicine – Wichita campus at 1010 N. Kansas.

You're invited to bring a sack lunch to the lecture.  Snacks and/or dessert and beverages will be provided.  Reservations are requested by calling 316-293-2643, and the lecture is free and open to the public.  The KU School of Medicine – Wichita campus is located at the 8th/9th Street exit on I-135.

KMUW's Carla Eckels and Frank Dudgeon will offer interviews on the topic during Morning Edition on February 13th and 14th, featuring Dr. Ashfaq and others from the community.  There is additional information about the series and audio archives on our website at www.kmuw.org.  Click on the News Link, then click on Live and Learn Lecture Series.

Dr. Ashfaq is currently Staff Cardiologist and Associate Director, Cardiology Section at the Robert J. Dole VAMC, and is Assistant Professor of Medicine, Cardiology, and Interventional Cardiology at the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita.  Dr. Ashfaq's post-graduate training has included work at the Emory University School of Medicine, as a Fellow in Interventional Cardiology from July 2002 – June 2003, and a Fellow in Cardiovascular Disease from July 1999 – June 2002.  He was Chief Resident for Barnes-Jewish Hospital Internal Medicine House Staff and Washington University Medical Students at the John Cochran VA Medical Center, St. Louis, Missouri from Jan 1999 – June 1999 and Intern and Resident in Internal Medicine at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri from June 1996 – June 1999.
