Decision-Making for the Chronically Ill
Chronic
Illness, Acute Answers
August 2003
Nearly one out of four households is involved in providing care for a person
aged 50 or older. About 26 million family caregivers provide personal assistance
to adults with a disability or chronic illness. As the population ages, many
adults find themselves looking after their parents or other family members who
depend on them for care and financial support.
On August 18th during Morning Edition KMUW aired a report on decision-making
for the chronically ill. Later that morning, Kathryn Thiessen, from the KU
School of Medicine - Wichita presented a Live and Learn Lecture, titled "Issues
in Chronic Care - When Your Parents Become Your Children." KMUW's Carla Eckels
also hosted a call-in program with regional experts answering your questions
about decision-making for the chronically ill.
