According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, as many as 80 percent of dementia-afflicted elderly people are cared for in their homes by family members. Care-giving, while compassionate, can sometimes exact a devasting toll on the provider physically, financially, and emotionally. Some doctors describe the caregiver as the "hidden patient."

"Caring for Caregivers" is December's Live & Learn lecture at the KU School of Medicine-Wichita. As part of the lecture series, FM89 Wichita Public Radio presented a companion news story and interview.
