Alcohol: Knowing When You've Had Enough
Chronic
Illness, Acute Answers
September 2003
One in thirteen American adults – nearly 14 million people – abuse alcohol or
are alcoholics. Sometimes the results are devastating: innocent deaths caused by
drunk drivers, the break-up of families, poor job performance, and
incarceration. But treatment for the disease is available. AA may first come to
mind. But other forms including counseling, prescription drugs and support group
therapy may all play an important part in overcoming the addiction.
On September 9th during Morning Edition KMUW aired a report on coping with
alcoholism. Later that morning, Dr. Timothy Scanlan, from the KU School of
Medicine-Wichita presented a Live and Learn Lecture, titled "Alcoholism:
Knowning When You've Had Enough." KMUW's Sam Hendren also hosted a call-in
program with Dr. Scanlan answering your questions about decision-making for the
chronically ill.
